Adelaide with Kids: The Real Age Limits, Day by Day
The short answer. Adelaide works well with children, as long as you match the day to the age. The river boats, the city walks and the market lunch walk take the youngest. The kayaks start at 8 or 10, the wildlife day at Cleland at 6, and several wine days and the 2-day island tour are for adults only. Check the minimum age before the date.

Ages are as each tour sets them, as of September 2026. "Any age" means the tour sells an infant or child fare from birth; tastings and drinks stay 18+ wherever they are poured.
Days that suit younger children
Short and flat wins with small children. Three days fit that well.
- The Popeye on the Torrens. Forty to fifty minutes on the river from Elder Park, from $21. Seats are first come, first served, and the boat takes strollers, though you climb six steps with handrails to board.
- The dolphin cruise from Port Adelaide. Ninety minutes with the skipper's commentary, and a toilet on board, from $63.
- The market lunch walk. The Taste of the Central Market walk runs 50 minutes and includes lunch, from $42, with child fares from 3.
For a walk through the city, the Ultimate Adelaide Walking Tour is stroller accessible and takes children with an adult. Two to three hours is long for a toddler, so it suits school-age children best.
Kayaks, koalas and kangaroos for older children
From about 8, the water opens up. The Dolphin Sanctuary and ships' graveyard kayak takes children from 8, and anyone 12 or under shares a kayak with an adult. The small-group Dolphin Sanctuary kayak starts at 10, and children up to 15 paddle with an adult. Each runs three hours on the Port River, where the dolphins live.
For animals on land, the Cleland Wildlife Park and Hahndorf day takes children from 6. Cleland Wildlife Park is 20 minutes from the city, and most of its animals live in open habitat. It opens 9:30 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:30.
The adults-only days
Some days are simply not for children. The Central Market discovery walk is for adults 18 and over. So is the Barossa day that starts from your Barossa accommodation, and the 2-day Kangaroo Island tour, which spends a night in a bell tent. The premium Barossa tasting day takes children from 5, though the tastings are for adults and strollers are not allowed on the coach.

What to prepare for
- Summer heat. January averages 28.7 °C in the city. Book water days for the morning and carry hats and water.
- Infants on laps. Several coach days seat infants on a parent's lap. Ask before you book if you need a child seat; the Cleland day lists infant seats.
- The long days. Kangaroo Island by ferry runs about 16 hours. The Kangaroo Island in a Day tour sells child and infant fares, but it meets at 6:30 and the ferry day ends near 22:40, which is long for a small child.
- Market days. The Central Market is closed on Sunday and Monday, so the market walks do not run then.
Free things to add around the tours
Not every hour needs a booking. The free tram runs along North Terrace, where the Botanic Garden is free every day, with a rainforest under glass and a raised boardwalk. The State Library runs a Little Library for children, open weekdays 10:00 to 18:00. The Glenelg tram takes you to the beach, and the tram is free within the city centre.
