Adelaide was laid out in 1836 on Colonel William Light's plan, a grid of wide streets ringed by Park Lands beside the River Torrens. Join us in the city where the Art Gallery of South Australia opened in 1881 and the Adelaide Central Market has traded since 1869. The Barossa is about an hour's drive away, McLaren Vale about 45 minutes, and Kangaroo Island a 45-minute ferry crossing from Cape Jervis. We bring together the walks, boats, wine days and island trips that reach them, and mark what each fare covers. Start with the three above.

The City Sights

North Terrace lines up the Art Gallery of South Australia, with free general entry, the South Australian Museum and the State Library, whose Mortlock Chamber is open to visitors. Rundle Mall and the Adelaide Arcade of 1885 hold the shopping streets, and the Botanic Garden is free every day. The Popeye boats leave Elder Park for 40 to 50 minutes on the Torrens.

The Adelaide Hills

Hahndorf, founded in 1839 by German Lutherans from Prussia, is Australia's oldest surviving German settlement and a state heritage area, 28 km from the city. Mount Lofty Summit looks back over Adelaide from more than 710 metres, with free entry and paid parking. Cleland Wildlife Park is 20 minutes from the city centre, and most of its animals live in open habitat.

The Wine Regions

The Barossa, about an hour north, counts more than 150 wineries and 80 cellar doors; Seppeltsfield dates from 1851 and Chateau Tanunda from 1890. McLaren Vale, 45 minutes south, has made wine since 1838, and more than half its vineyards grow shiraz. Each cellar door sets its own tasting fee, and every wine card here says whether the fare pays it.

Adelaide has no gate to buy a ticket for, so a fare pays for the tour and whatever it lists. Most Barossa days here pay the tasting fees and lunch, while the hop-on hop-off buses and the private day leave the tastings to each cellar door. The Kangaroo Island day by ferry and the 2-day tour carry national park entry, and the Cleland day carries the wildlife park's, but no fare includes holding a koala.

The island day's operator calls May to October the best months for wildlife, and the Kangaroo Island ferry does not run on Christmas Day.

There is no public transport, taxi or rideshare on the island, so without a car a tour is the practical way round. Do You Need a Tour in Adelaide?

Not for the city itself. There are no Adelaide Australia tickets to buy at a gate: the grid is easy to walk, the Central Market is free to wander, the Art Gallery has free general entry, and the tram is free in the city centre. Adelaide Australia ticket prices come down to the tour fare and what it covers.

A tour earns its fare beyond the city. South Australia's limit is 0.05 on a full licence and zero on a learner or provisional one, which rules out a day of tastings for whoever drives. Kangaroo Island needs the ferry from Cape Jervis and has no public transport, taxi or rideshare, and most wine and island fares here collect you from your hotel.

How an Adelaide Tour Day Runs

Pick the kind of day

A walk or a boat in the city, a wine day, a Hills or coast day, or the island. Most fares refund in full up to 24 hours ahead.

Meet or get collected

City walks meet at a street corner or the market, most day tours collect you between 8:30 and 9:30, and Kangaroo Island pickups begin as early as 6:15.

The day itself

Tastings and lunch at the cellar doors, time in Hahndorf, or sea lions and granite on the island, with a guide or skipper talking you through it.

Back by evening

City walks and cruises take three hours or less, wine and Hills days about eight, and the island day by ferry returns to Adelaide about 22:40.

How much do Adelaide tours cost?

From $21 for a 40 to 50 minute Popeye cruise on the Torrens, to $285 for the Kangaroo Island day and $648 for two days on the island. Walks through the city run from $42 to $73, and shared wine days from Adelaide from $72 on the hop-on bus to $190 for eight guests with the winemakers. Each card shows the current fare.

Do I need to book tours in advance?

Book the long days first. The Kangaroo Island day starts before 7:00 at the bus station, and the small-group wine days seat six to eight. Walks cap at 8 to 12 people, so a weekend market walk is worth booking a few days out.

Which tour should I take on my first day in Adelaide?

A two to three hour walking tour from Pirie Street gives you the city grid, North Terrace and the river before the day trips. The walk-and-Popeye combination adds a cruise on the Torrens at the end.

Can I see Kangaroo Island in a day?

Yes. The coach and ferry days run about 16 hours, with Seal Bay, the Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch and lunch on the island. The 2-day tour adds Stokes Bay, Little Sahara and a night in a bell tent at Flinders Chase.

Do wine tours include the tasting fees?

Most do: the Barossa days from Adelaide list their tastings in the fare, and so does the McLaren Vale day. The hop-on hop-off buses and the private Barossa day in a BMW leave tastings to be paid at each cellar door.

Is there a wine tour that also shows me the city?

Yes. The Adelaide Highlights day takes in the city, Mount Lofty Summit, Hahndorf and two McLaren Vale tastings in about eight hours. The Hahndorf and Barossa day pairs the Hills village with Barossa tastings and lunch.

Do day tours pick up from my hotel?

Most coach days collect from city and Glenelg hotels or from set points such as Stamford Plaza on North Terrace. Walks and cruises start at a meeting point, and the kayak tours launch from Garden Island, so you make your own way there.

Can children join Adelaide tours?

Many can. The Popeye cruise and the Port River dolphin cruise list no minimum age, the F Factor food walk takes children from 5, and the kayak tours from 8 or 10. The Central Market discovery walk, the Barossa-based wine day, one Barossa day from Adelaide and the 2-day island tour are for adults 18 and over.

What is the cancellation policy?

Every tour here refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours ahead, except the 2-day Kangaroo Island tour. That one refunds in full up to 6 days before, and later cancellations carry a fee.

Where can I see dolphins near Adelaide?

In the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary, in the Port River and its backwaters north-west of the city. You can go by cruise from the Port Adelaide wharf, or paddle there by kayak from Garden Island.

Which tours stop in Hahndorf?

Most Hills days and several wine days do, usually for one to two hours. The Gems in a Day tour, the Cleland day, the River Murray cruise days, the Adelaide Highlights day and the Hahndorf and Barossa day all stop there, and the Hills hop-on bus has a Hahndorf stop.

Can I hold a koala on a tour?

No tour fare includes it. The Cleland day includes park entry and a guided visit, and Cleland Wildlife Park sells its koala experiences separately.

Which boat tour is best in Adelaide?

It depends on the hour you have. Popeye covers the Torrens in 40 to 50 minutes, the Port River cruise adds dolphins and the ships' graveyard in an hour and a half, and the kayak tours put you on the water yourself for three hours. The River Murray lunch cruise sits inside a full Hills day.

Are the tours wheelchair accessible?

Some are. The Central Market walks, the F Factor food walk, the Ultimate Adelaide walking tour and the Dolphin Sanctuary and ships' graveyard kayak tour state wheelchair access. Most coach days and the boats do not, so ask the operator before you book.

What should I wear on a wine tour?

Comfortable shoes for cellar floors and vineyard paths, and a hat and sunscreen from November to March. The premium Barossa day allows no alcohol on the coach, so check your own tour's rules before you buy bottles.
