Adelaide Travel Guide: How to Plan a First Visit Around the Day Trips
The short answer. Spend your first half-day on foot in the city grid, then give each region its own day: the Barossa or McLaren Vale for wine, the Adelaide Hills for Hahndorf, and Kangaroo Island if you can spare 16 hours. Book the island and the small-group days before you fly. The walks and the river boat can wait until you land.
Adelaide is not one sight with a gate and a ticket. It is a compact city with the day trips around it, and most of what you will book is a seat on one of those days. It is easy to plan it like a big city with a week of sightseeing. The city itself takes a day; the regions take the rest. Quick facts before you arrive
- Visitor information: the Adelaide Visitor Information Centre is at 25 Pirie Street, with a second centre in the Central Market Arcade. Staff and volunteers run free guided walks of the city centre and a Greeters service.
- The city tram: travel within the city centre is free.
- The market: Adelaide Central Market trades Tuesday to Saturday, late on Friday, and is closed on Sunday and Monday.
- The weather: January averages a high of 28.7 °C, July 15.0 °C, and about half the year's rain falls from May to August.
- Tour fares: from $21 for the Popeye boat to $648 for two days on Kangaroo Island, as of September 2026.
- Cancellation: most tours refund in full up to 24 hours ahead; the 2-day island tour refunds up to 6 days ahead.
How the city is laid out
Colonel William Light laid out the centre in 1836 as a grid of wide streets ringed by Park Lands, beside the River Torrens. That plan still decides your first day. Victoria Square sits in the middle of the grid. The galleries, the museum and the library line North Terrace. Rundle Mall runs through the shops, and the Central Market is a few blocks south of it. The river and Elder Park are a short walk north of the shops.

Where each kind of day starts
The start point is the thing first-time visitors get wrong. Some days collect you from your hotel. Others meet on a street corner, at a wharf in Port Adelaide, or at a bus station before dawn.

What to book before you fly
Most days can be booked once you land. A few are worth booking from home.
- Kangaroo Island. The ferry day is flagged as likely to sell out, and the 2-day tour takes 18 guests at most.
- Small-group wine days. The Barossa day for eight fills eight seats, and the Barossa-based day takes six.
- Market walks on a Saturday. The discovery walk takes eight guests, and Saturday is the market's short day, closing at 15:00.
What can wait: the Popeye boats take 48 passengers each, first come, first served, and the Ultimate walk runs mornings and afternoons. Book them once you know your first free half-day.
How many days to give Adelaide
Count the city as one day and each region as another. That gives a plan most visitors can fit around flights.
- Day one, the city. A walk from Pirie Street, the market, North Terrace and the river.
- Day two, wine. The Barossa, about an hour away, or McLaren Vale, 45 minutes south.
- Day three, the Hills or the coast. Hahndorf and Mount Lofty Summit, or Victor Harbor and the Fleurieu.
- Day four, the island. Kangaroo Island by ferry, 16 hours door to door, or two days with a night in a tent.

When to come
Adelaide is warm and dry in summer and mild and wet in winter. The Bureau of Meteorology's city station averages 28.7 °C in January and 15.0 °C in July. June is the wettest month, with 72.1 mm, and January and February each average fewer than three days of rain.
Spring and autumn suit long coach days best. September averages a high of 18.5 °C and April 22.2 °C. Kangaroo Island has its own logic: the ferry day's operator calls May to October the best time for wildlife, and sea lion pups can arrive at Seal Bay any time from January to June. Getting around without a car
You do not need to hire a car for any of this. The city is flat and walkable, and the tram is free within the city centre. To the beach, the Glenelg tram leaves every 10 to 15 minutes and ends at Moseley Square, according to the City of Holdfast Bay.
