Best Time to Visit Adelaide for Tours, Month by Month

Green hills folding above a village church spire and trees in autumn colour

Adelaide runs tours all year, but the months change what a day feels like: summer heat on a coach day, winter rain on the water, vintage in the wine regions and whales off the coast. This guide goes month by month with the Bureau of Meteorology's averages, so you can pick your dates and the Adelaide sightseeing tours to match.

When is the best time to visit Adelaide?

Spring and autumn suit the most tours. September averages a high of 18.5 °C and April 22.2 °C, warm enough for a walk and cool enough for a full day on a coach. Rain is moderate in both seasons.

Summer is hot and dry: January and February average above 28 °C. Winter is mild but wet, with 10 to 12 rain days a month from May to August. Yet the ferry operator to Kangaroo Island names May to October as the best time for wildlife, so the island has its own calendar.

So choose by the tour that matters most to you: vintage in late summer and autumn, wildlife in the cooler months, and walks and boats in spring and autumn.

Adelaide month by month

Averages for the city from the Bureau of Meteorology's West Terrace station, with what each month means for tours.

January

Average high 28.7 °C, low 16.6 °C, with 20.1 mm of rain over 2.8 rain days. The hottest month in the city, with February. Book water tours and walks for the morning, and carry water. On Kangaroo Island it is fire season, and sea lion pups can arrive from now until June.

February

Average high 28.6 °C, low 16.8 °C, with 20.2 mm of rain over 2.5 rain days. The month with the fewest rain days. Vintage starts in the wine regions, according to Chateau Tanunda, so the cellars are busy with the harvest.

March

Average high 26.1 °C, low 15.2 °C, with 23.4 mm of rain over 3.5 rain days. Still warm, with little rain. Vintage continues, and the island's tourism body calls autumn the locals' favourite season.

April

Average high 22.2 °C, low 12.8 °C, with 43.4 mm of rain over 6.5 rain days. Mild days and the first real rain. On Kangaroo Island, autumn brings bright, clear days, low winds and calmer seas. Vintage ends in April or May.

May

Average high 18.6 °C, low 10.4 °C, with 67.2 mm of rain over 10.2 rain days. Rain rises sharply from April. The ferry operator's wildlife season begins, and southern right whales arrive on the southern coast from May to October.

June

Average high 15.8 °C, low 8.5 °C, with 72.1 mm of rain over 11.1 rain days. The wettest month by rainfall. Winter on the island runs June to August: joeys leave the pouch and the whales visit. Mid-year is when a ferry may be out for maintenance.

July

Average high 15.0 °C, low 7.6 °C, with 65.8 mm of rain over 11.9 rain days. The coldest month and the one with the most rain days. On Kangaroo Island, Kingscote averages 15.4 °C and 12.2 rain days in July.

August

Average high 16.1 °C, low 8.1 °C, with 61.1 mm of rain over 11.6 rain days. Still winter, and still wet. Pack a waterproof for the coast and the Hills, and keep a flexible day for the water tours.

September

Average high 18.5 °C, low 9.3 °C, with 50.3 mm of rain over 9.3 rain days. Spring arrives with warmer, longer days and wildflowers on the island. McLaren Vale's Grenache & Gourmet runs from 18 September to 5 October 2026.

October

Average high 21.4 °C, low 11.2 °C, with 43.9 mm of rain over 7.7 rain days. Pleasant for every kind of tour. Mount Lofty Summit's gates stay open until 23:00 from October to March, and the whale season ends.

November

Average high 24.4 °C, low 13.2 °C, with 31.3 mm of rain over 5.3 rain days. Warm and drying out. From now until March, take a hat and sunscreen on every tour.

December

Average high 26.9 °C, low 15.1 °C, with 25.9 mm of rain over 4.0 rain days. Summer on the island, its most popular season. Long-nosed fur seal pups are born at Admirals Arch in December and January. Many things close on Christmas Day.

Is summer too hot for a coach day?

Not usually, if you plan for it. Most coaches are air-conditioned, and a wine day spends much of its time inside cellar doors and at lunch. January averages 28.7 °C in the city, but single days run hotter.

What changes in summer is fire danger. Cleland Wildlife Park closes on catastrophic fire danger days, and summer is fire season on Kangaroo Island. Flinders Chase can also close in damaging winds. If your date carries a warning, check with your operator the day before.

Walks and water tours are best in the morning. Take a hat, sunscreen and water on every tour from November to March.

Is winter better for Kangaroo Island?

For wildlife, often yes. The ferry operator names May to October as the best time to see more wildlife, and the island's tourism body calls winter its "in season". Joeys leave the pouch, and southern right whales visit the coast. The state's tourism commission adds that winter brings fewer crowds.

The trade-off is weather. Kingscote averages 15.4 °C in July, with 12.2 rain days, and the ferry fleet is usually serviced mid-year. Pack layers and a waterproof for the long day, and keep a spare day in case the crossing is disrupted.

The Kangaroo Island tours from Adelaide run all year except Christmas Day on the full day by ferry.

When can you see whales and seal pups?

  • Southern right whales: May to October along Australia's southern coast, according to the parks service.
  • Australian sea lion pups at Seal Bay: generally born between January and June, though the 18-month breeding cycle makes each year different.
  • Long-nosed fur seal pups at Admirals Arch: usually born in December and January.
  • Dolphins in the Port River: the cruise and kayak tours run all year, weather permitting.

No tour here is a whale-watching trip, and no operator can promise a sighting.

When do the water tours cancel?

Any of them can, when the weather is poor. The Popeye offers another date, and the operators give you the choice of another date or a full refund. The wettest months, May to August, are when this happens most.

Kayak tours are the most exposed, since you paddle for three hours. If your trip is short, book the water tour for your first free day, so a cancellation can move to a later one.

The Port River cruise, the Popeye and the kayak tours are compared on Adelaide boat tours.

When is vintage in the wine regions?

Chateau Tanunda puts vintage from February until April or May each year. White grapes are picked before reds, and the warmer Barossa Valley floor is usually picked before the cooler Eden Valley.

That makes late summer and autumn the season for wine lovers. Book the small-group wine days early for those months, since they seat six to eight.

In spring, McLaren Vale's Grenache & Gourmet runs from 18 September to 5 October 2026. The Adelaide wine tours include the McLaren Vale day.

What closes on Christmas Day?

  • The Kangaroo Island ferry, and the full day by ferry.
  • Seal Bay Conservation Park and Cleland Wildlife Park.
  • The Art Gallery of South Australia and the South Australian Museum, which also closes on Good Friday.
  • The Mount Lofty Summit gift shop.

The State Library's exhibition spaces close on public holidays, and Adelaide Central Market never trades on a Sunday or Monday. Plan the days either side of Christmas with that in mind.

What to pack by season

  • Summer: a hat, sunscreen, a water bottle and light layers for air-conditioned coaches.
  • Autumn: a light jacket for cool mornings in the Hills and the Barossa.
  • Winter: a waterproof, warm layers and closed shoes, above all for the ferry day.
  • Spring: layers for changeable days, and sunscreen from November.
  • All year: comfortable shoes for cellar floors and city pavements.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time of year for Adelaide tours?
Spring and autumn give mild coach days: the average high is 18.5 °C in September and 22.2 °C in April. January and February average above 28 °C, and the Kangaroo Island operator names May to October as the best time for wildlife.
When is vintage in the Barossa?
Chateau Tanunda puts it from February until April or May each year. White grapes come in before reds, and the warmer valley floor is usually picked before the cooler Eden Valley.
When can you see whales near Adelaide?
The parks service says southern right whales gather along the southern coast of Australia from May to October. No tour here is a whale-watching trip, so treat a sighting as a bonus.
Do the water tours run in bad weather?
Operators can cancel for weather. When they do, you are offered another date or a full refund.
What should I wear on a wine tour?
Comfortable shoes for cellar floors and vineyard paths, and a hat and sunscreen from November to March. The premium Barossa day allows no alcohol on the coach, so check your own tour's rules before you buy bottles.
Can I see Kangaroo Island in a day?
Yes. The coach and ferry days run about 16 hours, with Seal Bay, the Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch and lunch on the island. The 2-day tour adds Stokes Bay, Little Sahara and a night in a bell tent at Flinders Chase.
What is the cancellation policy?
Every tour here refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours ahead, except the 2-day Kangaroo Island tour. That one refunds in full up to 6 days before, and later cancellations carry a fee.
