Kangaroo Island from Adelaide Without a Tour: Ferry, Car and Park Passes

You can see Kangaroo Island on your own: drive to Cape Jervis, take the ferry to Penneshaw, and explore by car. This guide covers the ferry, the drive, the park entries and where to stay, and shows when the Kangaroo Island tours from Adelaide save you the trouble.

Can you visit Kangaroo Island without a tour?

Yes, and most visitors who stay a few nights do. South Australia's tourism commission recommends self-drive for the island and suggests two to three nights, longer for a slower trip.

The island is large for a day trip: 4,416 square kilometres, about 155 kilometres long and 55 wide, with 540 kilometres of coast. Its tourism body says you can see some of it in a day. On your own, you trade the tour's fixed route for time: you choose where to stop and how long to stay.

What you cannot rely on is public transport. The island has no public buses, taxis or rideshare, so you need a car, a tour, or both.

How does the ferry work?

SeaLink runs the ferry between Cape Jervis on the mainland and Penneshaw on the island. The crossing takes 45 minutes across Backstairs Passage, which is 15 kilometres wide.

• Services: two large vehicle and passenger ferries, with up to 12 return services a day in peak periods.
• Booking: the tourism body advises booking the ferry before your accommodation, because ferry space can decide your dates.
• Mid-year maintenance: one ferry may be out of service for a short period, usually around the middle of the year, which limits space for vehicles.
• On the day: arrive at the terminal at least 30 minutes before departure.
• Christmas Day: the ferry does not run.

SeaLink sets the fares, and you see them when you book. The island also has strict biosecurity: bees, honey products and unwashed potatoes may not be taken across.

How do you get to Cape Jervis?

Drive. The tourism commission puts Cape Jervis about an hour and a half from Adelaide, on the Fleurieu Peninsula. Allow extra time to arrive 30 minutes before your sailing.

If you would rather not drive on the mainland, the island tours run the coach for you: they leave Adelaide Central Bus Station on Franklin Street early in the morning and meet the ferry.

Can you fly instead?

Yes. QantasLink flies from Adelaide to Kingscote Airport in about 30 minutes, the fastest way to reach the island. You then need a car on arrival, and the tourism body notes that local hire is available.

Flying suits a longer stay based in Kingscote. For a day visit, it still leaves you without a guide or a vehicle on the island.

Do you need a car on the island?

For anything beyond Kingscote, yes. A shuttle bus meets the morning and evening ferries and runs to Kingscote twice a day. It links the ferry with Kingscote, not with the parks.

• Roads: the main roads suit a two-wheel-drive car. Unsealed roads can be used with care.
• Wildlife: animals cross the roads, above all at dawn and dusk, so drive slowly then.
• Fuel: petrol is sold in Kingscote, Penneshaw, American River, Parndana and Vivonne Bay, with 24-hour fuel in the first three.
• Food: supermarkets are in Penneshaw, Kingscote and Parndana.
• Phones: Telstra covers much of the island, other networks drop out, and the western end has little or no reception. Download your maps first.

If there is no room for your car on the ferry, the tourism body suggests hiring one on the island instead.

What do park entries cost?

The parks set and change their own fees, so check them with National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia before you go. What is fixed is how you pay:

• Flinders Chase National Park: entry fees apply, and the parks service asks you to pay before you go, online or at the visitor centre at 8125 South Coast Road, Karatta, 800 metres outside the park.
• Seal Bay Conservation Park: tickets are sold at the Seal Bay visitor centre, and no booking is needed.
• More than one park: the parks service sells a Kangaroo Island Tour Pass, listed on its booking pages.
• Children: a Kangaroo Island Parks Passport is stamped at Cape Willoughby Lighthouse, Seal Bay, Flinders Chase, Kelly Hill Caves and the Kingscote office.

On a tour, the fare can cover this: the Kangaroo Island full day by ferry and the 2-day tour include the national park fees.

Can you walk the beach at Seal Bay on your own?

Not at the moment. Seal Bay's Australian sea lions are endangered, and visitors normally reach the beach with a guide. As of 17 September 2026, the parks service has paused beach access to protect the colony, with a roaming guide on the boardwalk instead.

The boardwalk is 900 metres return and wheelchair accessible. The park is open 9:00 to 17:00 every day except Christmas Day, with last entry at 16:00, and it is about 45 minutes' drive from Kingscote.

How long does it take to drive to Flinders Chase?

Flinders Chase is at the island's western end, 110 kilometres west of Kingscote and about 266 kilometres from Adelaide. The tourism commission warns that drive times can be longer than you expect, so give the park a full day of its own.

At the park, the Remarkable Rocks have an accessible boardwalk, and Admirals Arch at Cape du Couedic has a steep boardwalk with steps, known for its long-nosed fur seals. The park can close in damaging winds, and it has no bins, so take your rubbish with you. The Rocks Café is at the visitor centre.

If you have time for a walk, the Cape du Couedic hike is a 2-kilometre loop of about 40 minutes, and the Platypus Waterholes walk was rebuilt after the firestorm of 3 January 2020.

Where should you stay?

The tourism commission suggests Kingscote, Penneshaw, American River or the coastal stays. Kingscote is the island's main town, and Penneshaw is where the ferry lands.

To wake up near the western sights, the parks service rents campsites and heritage cottages inside Flinders Chase, bookable up to 12 months ahead. The 2-day tour sleeps you in a bell tent at a camp in Flinders Chase Discovery Park, with dinner and breakfast in the fare.

When does a tour win?

• When you have one day. Only a tour fits the ferry, Seal Bay and Flinders Chase into a day and still gets you back to Adelaide.
• When you would rather not drive. The coach, the ferry and the island roads at dawn and dusk are all the guide's job.
• When you are travelling alone. A single seat is simpler than a car on the ferry, and the guide explains the sights.
• When you want it planned. Park entry, lunch and the ferry are booked in one fare.
