Should you do Kangaroo Island in a day?

Yes, if one day is all you can give it. The day tours check in at Adelaide Central Bus Station on Franklin Street early in the morning, cross on the 45-minute ferry from Cape Jervis, and spend about three and a half hours at the sights. Walking tour or coach city tour?

Walk if you want to understand the city grid. Which tours start before 7am?

Only the Kangaroo Island tours. One asks you to be at the bus station by 6:30, and the 2-day tour collects from city hotels between 6:15 and 6:35.

The start times other tours list are later. The Barossa and Hills days that give a time leave between 8:30 and 9:30. The market discovery walk meets at 9:30, and the walk with the Popeye, the Hills hop-on bus and the private Barossa day start at 10:00. If you land late the night before, put Kangaroo Island later in your stay.

Private or shared?

The only private tour here is a Barossa day in a BMW 5 Series for up to four, priced per group at $462. It runs from a half day to a full day, and the tastings and lunch are paid at each stop. Shared between four, it costs about $115 each before the tastings.

A small shared group is often the better buy. The eight-guest Barossa day pays every tasting fee and lunch for $190, and the Cleland day takes eight guests at most. The day from your Barossa accommodation takes six.

Who should skip tours entirely?

Some visitors are better off on their own, and it is worth knowing if you are one of them.
